Esteban, our associate, is a member of the Yagua tribe and is versed in all jungle lore. His reason for establishing the lodge was not only to preserve the culture of his tribe, but with his infectious enthusiasm to share their way of life and to teach visitors a little about the flora and fauna.
Do you want to stay in a bungalow in the lodge with proper beds, running water, shower, toilets?
Or would you like to experience the life of the Yagua indian?
Both are possible.
Read about Michael's first visit to the Amazon and how Amazon Curaca Camp was born. He has his own cocamera or round house when in residence, and a little village of these will be built if enough people would like to experience this life. Read more about this programme.
Esteban and the other English speaking guides will teach you about the flora and fauna, showing you precious flowers such as the orchid, that are to be found in abundance. See if you can spot rare animals and birds, such as the capybara - the biggest rodent in the world - the river otter, the giant river otter, the South American river turtle, the toucan and the tapir.
You can also find the three toed sloth, the spectacled bear, the spider monkey, the yacare, caiman, puma, manatee, swamp crocodile and the yellow headed parrot, amongst many others.
In fact, there are some 1500 species of birds in Amazonia and this link will give you a flavour of them, together with some of the animals. Rainforest Education.
You will travel by "pequepeque" - motorised canoe - along the longest river in the world, where the guide will point out some of this flora and fauna. You will see flocks of parrots screeching overhead, the hanging nests ot the oropendula, which has a cry like something being dropped into water, and pink river dolphins - and even swim with them. You will meet the locals who live on the river bank and will be told wonderful myths and legends, many of which have never been told before.
For those of us caught up in modern living, it is a wonderful opportunity to unwind, to experience the river that has more biodiversity than any other in the world and has the most unspoilt rainforest.
Come and experience this as a couple, as a family or as a group. And help to preserve the rainforest and the lifestyle and culture of the locals.
