Eco-Tourism in Peru and the Amazon

Much is written about problems relating to global warming and, in particular, the destruction of vast swathes of the Amazon rainforest. But the destruction is mostly not taking place in Peru, although exploration for oil is happening.

We love the jungle and wish to preserve it both for ecological and for cultural reasons. For this reason, we do not want to crowd the river with tourists, but to take small groups or encourage you to take tailor-made holidays. The jungle, while gaining in popularity, must never become full of trippers. If you look at our 7 day and 12 day Programmes, you will see that our aim is to introduce you to what in Spanish they call the naturaleza, and for our guides to teach you how to respect it and how the natives live in it.

We are only too aware that Western culture is all pervasive, and that the remaining indigenous tribes are retreating further and further into the jungle to avoid our advance. What we seek to do, therefore, is to try to redress the balance, by reintroducing local culture and learning how to respect the jungle, while providing a living for the communities close to our two lodges. Visitors will be encouraged to learn what they can do to help these lovely people preserve – or recapture – their culture and lifestyle, while giving them the financial and medical support they need.

For interested groups, we can give a presentation which invokes the flavour of the jungle, with Michael wearing the traditional dress of a Curaca – chief – of the Yagua tribe. He will show handicrafts and how they are used, give a PowerPoint presentation and discuss how we can help preserve the rainforest. (A charge will naturally have to be made for this, but can be discounted in part from subsequent bookings made).

For more information please contact us now.

You will note from our 7 day and 12 day Programmes that visitors will have the opportunity to sample the culture of the Yagua tribe, learning how to make their traditional costume and – for the brave – even perhaps wearing it.

We hope that you will feel inspired to help us to prevent this Amazon culture and habitat from disappearing, by preventing the encroachment of our own culture and the destruction of the rainforest in Brazil.

The Matses and Mayorunas

These tribes live deep in the jungle and avoid contact with the outside world as much as possible in order to preserve their way of life. We are working with friends to help them preserve their culture and to protect them from the encroaching western lifestyle. We should like support to protect them from prying eyes by preventing the development of the jungle and by preventing tourists from going and gawping at them. It has come to our notice that agencies are offering trips to visit these tribes, which means that the some sections of them are now going the same way as the Yaguas. We believe that these agents should be actively discouraged and should restrict their activities to exploring the naturaleza and helping the villages around the lodges.
