Amazon Curaca Camp is situated 170km up river from Iquitos near the community of San Joaquin de Omaguas, on high ground overlooking the Amazon. Not only does its elevation enable it to escape the flooding prevalent in other lodges, but it also affords pleasant views of the river from certain positions.
The bungalows are dotted amongst the trees in a completely natural setting, all being constructed from local materials. They have shared showers and are protected by mosquito nets. There is also a central dining hall and lounge. Just beyond the windows the forest is alive with monkeys, parrots, sloths, toads, cicadas, glow worms, tapirs, boars, and iguana, while in the river close by are alligators and many varieties of fish. And then there are the birds, of many colours and songs, colours flashing as they fly overhead, squawking as they go.
You can walk safely along paths between the bungalows and beyond into the jungle surrounding the camp - in a completely natural setting, amongst the wildife. Growing all around is fruit: many varieties of bananas, plus mangos, papayas, guavas, pineapples and many more. And these are served in the dining room.
Most of the food is produced locally. We eat fresh fish and the cook will cook for you the fish you catch on fishing trips.
As you will see from the photos, the camp is still being developed to enable more than 30 guests to stay at any one time.

This is our other more mature lodge situated on the tranquil Yarapa River. Although at high river the water comes very close to it, it doesn't flood - and is built in the traditional mnner on stilts . It is situated beside the tiny village of Jaldar, right in the jungle and beside the beautiful hidden lakes of Moringo, Carmen Cocha and Chontillo where we go to spot the herons and other birds, together with the Victoria Regis Lily, the largest floating plant on the Amazon.
While the Amazon is fast flowing the Yarapa is a black river, very calm and peaceful, with wonderful reflections of the surrounding jungle.
