TRUJILLO

The Capital of the Eternal Spring

Because of its wealth of physical and cultural attractions Trujillo is now the centre of tourism in the north of Peru. Its famous festivals, much of them religious in nature, have served repeatedly to demonstrate the beauty and richness of its culture and folklore.

The third largest city in Peru, Trujillo lies on the north coast 349 miles from Lima, in the Moche Valleywhere the Moche and Chimu civilisations developed between 200BC and 700AD. Both cultures were remarkable for their pottery and work in gold and silver.

The main events that take place in Trujillo are those that have acquired an international reputation and are:

* The National Marinera Concourse
* The International Spring Festival.

During these festivals the centre of the city is a wonderful complex of tourist attractions, taking place amongst and integrated with the colonial houses, churches, squares and monuments.

.

Five miles south of Trujillo stand the ceremonial centres or huacas known as the Temples of the Sun and the Moon of the Moche civilisation. It is believed that they were, respectively, an administrative centre and a centre of worship. The Temple of the Sun is a graded pyramid

Archaeological attractions are found in the adjacent Moche Valley, where are located many pre-Inca sites, the most important of which is Chan Chan, city of mud, the religious and administrative centre of the great Chimú empire.
